2020 in the rearview mirror

In the midst of a global pandemic, the team at Clean Production Action continued to bend the course of the toxic chemicals economy to safer solutions.  We transitioned to a completely virtual organization, ceased all travel, yet continued to move markets to safer chemicals. Impacts of our 2020 work included:

    • ​Partnered with Center for Environmental Health (CEH) in drafting criteria for PFAS-free and environmentally preferred Food Service Ware products. In Q1 2021, CPA and CEH will jointly launch GreenScreen Certified for Food Service Ware.

Raising demand for reduced chemical footprints

  • CFP_FootInvestors taking action …
    • Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN) members led the first-ever shareholder resolution on chemical footprint reporting at the retailer, TJX Companies. Filed by Trillium Asset Management and First Affirmative Financial Network the resolution nearly passed with 44% of TJX shareholders voting in favor of the resolution
    • The GreenBiz article by Meg Wilcox, “Chemical Footprinting Comes of Age,” highlighted growing investor demand for chemical footprinting.
  • Corporations disclosing and reducing their chemical footprint, including …
    • Hasbro highlighted its participation in the Chemical Footprint Project (CFP)
    • Seventh Generation announced that it “eliminated all CFP-listed chemicals of concern in all of our products.” 
    • Walmart released its latest chemical footprint metrics.

  • Reducing the chemical footprint of the renewable energy economy
    • Outlined strategies for renewable energy companies to reduce the chemical footprints of their products, supply chains and manufacturing operations in the report, Elements of change: Moving forward together towards a cleaner safer future.  A publication with the Collaboratory for a Regenerative Economy (CoRE), which is an initiative of the Department of Materials Design and Innovation (University at Buffalo), Niagara Share, and Clean Production Action.

Taking Steps to Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI)

  • Promoted Kayla Williams into our newly created position, “DEI Lead and Communications Coordinator.” Kayla’s new role includes: 
    • Fostering organizational alignment around the terms diversity, equity and inclusion;
    • Shifting the narrative about how we think about our work, its impacts, and alignment to DEI concepts + values  and how that is communicated to the world;
    • BizNGO_LogoTraining staff; and
    • Establishing core DEI committee.
  • Kayla Williams led BizNGO’s first ever session on DEI and Environmental Justice at our 15th BizNGO Annual Meeting, which included featured presentations by:
    • Hannah McCall, Founder, Clean Beauty for Black Girls
    • José Bravo, Executive Director, Just Transition Alliance; and National Coordinator, Dollar Store Campaign
    • Additionally, the session featured commentary by: Martin Wolf, Director of Sustainability & Authenticity, DEI Committee Member; Seventh Generation.

Finally reflecting upon the leadership work of Clean Production Action in advancing a world free of toxic chemicals, I am especially pleased to share that the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable honored me with their 2020 Pollution Prevention (P2) Ambassador Award.
